Our What?

MISSION AND STRUCTURE

The Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG) is the legislative arm of, and the dedicated advocate for the Purdue graduate student body. We continuously seek out ways to engage our graduate students with each other, with Purdue University, and with the Greater Lafayette community.

The Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG) structure consists of three interworking branches: the Executive Board, the Purdue Graduate Student Senate (PGSS), and our Teams. We are located at The Purdue Graduate Student Center – the home of PGSG, and all graduate students.

The Executive Board consists of the elected body of leaders of PGSG. Members of the Executive Board are as follows: President, Chief of Staff, Public Relations Officer, Senate Chair, Treasurer, Diversity Officer, Legislative Affairs, Life Team Chair, Career Team Chair, Community Team Chair, Grant Review and Allocation Council, and Parliamentarian. Each Executive Board member has their own distinct roles that contribute to our mission of serving and advocating for the Purdue graduate student body. Executive Board members are available to meet with graduate students via email and during their respective office hours.

The Purdue Graduate Student Senate (PGSS) is the representative body for graduate students at Purdue University and the legislative arm of the PGSG. The PGSS consists of Senators who are voting members of the Senate and represent a wide variety of graduate departments, programs, and centers. Each program and center selects their Senators as outlined in the PGSG constitution. If your department, program, or center does not have a Senator elected for a given year, please contact the Senate Chair.

At the Purdue Graduate Student Senate meetings, graduate students bring ideas and concerns they want to address and take part in a discussion and debate. Senators work with the Parliamentarian to write bills and resolutions following formalized procedure. If passed within the Senate, the PGSG Executive Board then follows up to implement these initiatives that are raised within bills and resolutions from the Senate. Topics discussed and voted on may include changes to present PGSG operation, PGSG sponsored expenditures and co-sponsorships, resolutions pertinent to current events, among others. As an advocate for the entire graduate student body, PGSS may even seek to influence university level policy as it pertains to the welfare of graduate students.

Teams consist of Life, Career, Community, and Grant Review and Allocation Council (GRAC). Each Team is led by a Team Chair. Team Chairs are elected leaders and are responsible for managing their respective teams and their goals, sometimes with the assistance of a Vice Chair. The Teams operate under the supervision and guidance of the Chief of Staff. All graduate students are welcome to become a member of a Team and may contact the Chief of Staff if interested. Team Chairs are available to meet with graduate students via email and during their respective office hours.

Our Who?

WE ARE PURDUE

The “We are Purdue” statement of values was created in 2013. It started as a student-led initiative, which was subsequently endorsed by the University Senate. The idea for this statement arose when students representing the Purdue Anti-Racism Coalition met with President Daniels to discuss tolerance and diversity on campus. In that meeting, one of the needs that was identified was a statement of values for Purdue. The statement was developed in collaboration with Purdue Student Government and its Presidents Roundtable, that includes over 40 student groups. Before it’s release, feedback was also sought from students, faculty, and staff. You can read more about the statement of values here and here.
