PGSG statement in support of UC academic workers

To the Purdue Community:

On Monday, November 14, University of California (UC) academic workers organized through United Auto Workers (UAW) began an open-ended strike across all ten UC campuses. 35,654 workers voted to authorize the strike, representing 98% of those voting. This includes 17,000 student researchers. The UC academic workers are demanding increases in compensation, more rights for parents, and more resources for those with disabilities. We, the Purdue Graduate Student Government (PGSG), as graduate students, stand in solidarity with all graduate students, including those in the UC system. On November 16, PGSG passed a resolution, “Support for UC Academic Workers on Strike,” to declare our support for fellow academic workers at the University of California. Additionally, PGSG passed a bill to donate $100 from our discretionary fund to their “Strike Support and Hardship Fund.” 

PGSG recognizes that housing, wage, cost of living, and working environment issues are also relevant to our student body. PGSG supports graduate student activities here on campus that aim to address and improve these issues at Purdue University. We hope students will support PGSG’s efforts through working with upper administration and the Graduate School to continue to improve conditions for graduate students at Purdue University.
